As Father's Day is fast approaching, this Sunday, 19 June 2011, I am dedicating this Blog to all the wonderful Fathers who have sacrificed so much for their families, who are always there when you need them, who are the first you would call if you are in trouble. Thanks to all the dads out there.
Some facts about Father's Day:
Fathers' Day is a special day to honor not only our dads but those who've been a father figure to us. Fathers' Day falls on the third Sunday of the month of June.
It is believed that the idea for "fathers' day" started in 1909 when Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, after hearing mass on Mothers' Day, felt that all Fathers like her own dad, William Jackson Smart, should be honored as well.
William Smart lost his wife after she gave birth to their sixth child. After her death, William Smart raised all his six children singled-handedly. It was a huge responsibility for any single parent. It is because of William Smart's selfless love that Sonora thought of having a "fathers' day" and this idea spread throughout her Spokane, Washington hometown.
On June 19, 1910, the first celebration of Fathers' Day occurred which was also the birthday of William Smart. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge continued to support this day. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared that Fathers' Day be celebrated every third Sunday of June.
Finally in 1972, President Richard Nixon made Fathers' Day a permanent national observance.
To honor that special man in your life, here are several links to songs in honor of Dads. I have included links to their music videos and some sheet music.
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY..!
Father and Daughter - Paul Simon
(Lyrics)
If you leap awake in the mirror of a bad dream
And for a fraction of a second you can't remember where you are
Just open your window and follow your memory upstream
To the meadow in the mountain where we counted every falling star
I believe a light that shines on you will shine on you forever
And though I can't guarantee there's nothing scary hiding under your bed
I'm gonna stand guard like a postcard of a Golden Retriever
And never leave 'til I leave you with a sweet dream in your head
[Chorus:]
I'm gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you'll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
Who loved his daughter more than I love you
Trust your intuition
It's just like goin' fishin'
You cast your line and hope you get a bite
But you don't need to waste your time
Worryin' about the market place
Try to help the human race
Struggling to survive its harshest night
[Chorus 2x]
