A Note From Min Min Tay

Pianist | Music Educator | Performer | Author

    Piano Educator Min Min Tay

    My Passion in Music.

As Singaporean child, My love for music started when I was all but 2 years old. I was surrounded by the sounds of music from my mum’s studio. I used to climb up the piano bench the moment her students leave as I couldn’t wait to tinkle on the keys.

This love for music has taken me very far. I started my music education with my mum who gave me a very strong foundation in finger technic and musicality. At the age of 13, I continued my music education with Mr Ong Lip Tat for the next 5 years. It was under Mr Ong’s encouragement that I decided to further my studies in the US. It has taken me to Ohio and Seattle where I completed my Bachelor of Music as well as my Master of Music Degrees.

The Music path is a tough and sometimes lonely road with many hours spent in the practice studios, honing your skills and making the musical passage sound effortless, though it may not be so. Many students now learn music, though few may want to travel on this path less trodden.

Learning music is the experience of being able to produce the sounds and create the effect of musical wonder from an instrument invented so many years ago. It is the knowledge of understanding the life of the composer and how each sound is being created to weave and tell the story that the composer would want to tell if he was yet alive. That is the mark of a true musician.

I hope all of you who are learning music will find out more about the piece you are playing because as musicians, it is your responsibility to bring the composers’ works to life and tell the intended story to the audience.

To those who have yet to start on your musical journey, do think about having music in your life. Whether you do choose music as your ultimate career, just having music in your life, will create joy and provide an outlet for you in times of joy and sadness.

It is indeed a wonderful journey and experience. I have never regretted it and I know you will not as well.

  • Reviews from my students,

I'm an adult learner and I've been doing my piano diploma with Ms Tay since 2019. Ms Tay is a very patient and caring piano teacher and I look forward to my piano lessons withher every week. Being a skilful musician, she is able to demonstrate how the different pieces should be played and expressed. And I like how she provides examples & analogy to help me better understand how the pieces should be played or expressed. She is also very clear in explaining the music concepts and provides scaffolding so that i don’t feel overwhelmed with the pieces. More importantly, she looks after the well-being of her students and goes out of her way to know her students so that music lessons are comfortable and enjoyable. Am blessed to have her as my piano teacher!

I started music theory lessons with Ms Tay in 2019, as I wanted to sit for the Grade 6 exam. She is an excellent teacher who explains concepts clearly and patiently. This is particularly important for higher music theory grades, where there are many ways to
complete a question. As an adult learner I found her very approachable. Within half a year I managed to prepare for the G6 exam and scored a Distinction!

Learning was a challenge in 2020, when in-person lessons had to be stopped due to COVID-19. Luckily I could send her the music theory papers via post for marking. She also took the trouble to scan the marked scripts and send them via email, in case the papers were lost. In the end I got a Distinction in my G8 theory!

My son has been learning from Min Min since year 2012 at age 10. He has advanced so much in term of technicality, musicality in piano playing and knowledge in music theory.

Min Min is a very patient teacher with strong background, she is very good at adapting teaching method to each individual's capacity of learning but also challenging them to improve. She plans the course well in advance in anticipating for piano exams so that the student will have time to go through a few rounds of simulated exam just before the real ones. I will definitely recommend Min Min to other parents or students who are planning to start their journey for learning piano!

Ms Tay is my music theory teacher. All I wanted was to brush up on my rusty theory knowledge that I have not been 'in touched', and theories helps me importantly while singing. Never would I expect a distinction at 91 marks in my grade 5 theory, more so of her teaching in learning methods which has instilled in me. Her teaching is systematic and structured, and her patience is an understatement. All I need is do my homework regularly, no short cuts, no excuses. I had a break for about a year and I have no doubt to come back to seek her guidance in my preparation for my Sight-Singing and Aural in grade 8. If you are looking for a good and responsible music teacher, Ms Tay is one!

I came to Ms Tay when I wanted to do my diploma and have been under Ms Tay's teaching for a few years. Ms Tay has been shaping my musicality and technique ever since and under her teaching, I've learnt so much from engaging an audience to music analysis. She's not only helped me in graded exams and O Level Higher Music recitals, but also has been giving me life advices; something I'll forever be thankful for:)

The thing I really love about her teaching is that she doesn't make you feel bad about your mistakes. She's really there to help you move forward with her supportive gusto. We always laugh together when I make a bad/awkward move, and progress from there. She helps me figure out what the pieces mean to her and what they could mean to me.

Ms Tay is a truly talented and knowledgeable musician (thank you for making my Wednesday classes the best

Ms Tay!!) I recommend her to all pianists, especially those looking for advanced piano lessons, as well as increasing their piano knowledge!

Ms Min Min, whom is my music teacher, is very well-versed in musical arena. She is very detail and focus in her teaching. I have been able to apply her different teaching techniques on my sight reading. Slowly, I find that I can sight read a lot of other pieces and enjoy my playing. Leveraging on her perfect pitch, I learnt a lot from her on the sight-singing under ABRSM syllabus. Teacher Min Min, 💓 thanks for guiding and teaching me.

Ms Tay has been teaching me as an adult student for piano lessons weekly and has done this for almost a year. She is not only talented and knowledgeable about music, but also has passionate about the art form. I feel very fortunate to be learning from her.

I had lessons with Teacher Min Min for a few months, and have improved quite a lot through her structured lessons. Min Min is patient, knowledgeable and a dedicated teacher. I always feel motivated to attend her lessons and inspired to play better.
