Intensive Music Theory

This topic on Music Theory is very close to my heart. I blogged about it some time ago. However, I feel I must reiterate the importance of Music Theory again.

What is Music Theory? and Why is it Important?

Music Theory is the study of how music works. It forms an Integral part of Music Education. Composers use symbols and notes for their music compositions and if you do not understand what they mean, how can you be an effective musician? How can you appreciate the piece you are playing? and more importantly, how would you be able express and interpret the music to what the composer intended?

Music and Theory must go hand in hand. As the saying goes, “A good musician is one who understands how the music works.” Hence, a student lacking in music knowledge is missing out on a huge piece of the pie. The student is missing out on a wealth of knowledge in terms of understanding and appreciating how music works.

I have received many enquiries regarding Music Theory lessons and adults piano lessons, I found that many students are struggling with their theory lessons. Some do not have theory incorporated in their regular piano lessons and many students find themselves at a bottleneck when they reach Grade 5 Practical and realise that they require a minimum of Grade 5 Theory in order to proceed on to Grade 6 and beyond. These are stressful times for both parents and students.

Why do so Many students Fear Music Theory?

Many students dread the thought of Music Theory. The mere mention of the word Theory can cause grimacing looks of pain in students and send some scurrying away. This is because they were never taught theory in a proper manner. Theory is always left to the very last minute. Most will not have a chance to fully grasp and understand it, let alone appreciate it.

So, make sure you incorporate theory in your Music Lessons, and if you are a student playing other instruments, do find a good Theory Teacher to get you started.

My Goal and Objective of teaching the Intensive Music Theory is to help you to grasp the relevant theory knowledge, so you have a better understanding and appreciation of music. Through it all, it will also help you to be a better and well rounded musician.

My lessons are conducted in a systematic and easy to learn manner.
The Materials are organised and clearly explained.

My Theory Lessons are divided into 3 groups:

I. Grades 1-3
II. Grades 4-5
II. Grades 6-8

The intensive Music Theory is only suitable for students who are committed to passing their ABRSM Theory Examination.
This will require Determination, Commitment and Perseverance which are the keys to Success!
