In Memoriam:
Dr. Steven Baxter (1946-2010)
Founding Director of NUS’ Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YSTCM) and former Dean of the Peabody Conservatory of Music, The Johns Hopkins University, Dr Steven Baxter passed away in the afternoon of 5 July 2010 (US time) at age 64 of mesothelioma.
News of his passing was received with great sadness. My first impression of him when I had my first interview was of a very immaculate man, with a quiet sense of humor but he made me feel at ease.
Having worked with him at the Conservatory from 2004-2005, Dr. Baxter was a very thoughtful, organised, and deeply committed Director. He had great insights, integrity, leadership (but never authoritative) and a wealth of experience.
Dr. Baxter made the students feel comfortable and chatted with them frequently. He will certainly be missed.
